Do Colleges In Your Area Have Web Pages That Support Civic Action, Community Service, and/or Development ??
|
G'Day All --
Do colleges or universities in your area provide on-line resources that support civic action, community service, and/or development ??
Here are some examples from the University of Wisconsin, in the United States:
1. Community Development Planning Curriculum -- Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Wisconsin
http://www.wisc.edu/urpl/academics/concentrations/community_development.html
2. COMM-ORG: The Online Conference on Community Organizing and Development -- University of Wisconsin
http://comm-org.wisc.edu/
3. Community Economic Development: People, Courses, Research -- Center for Agricultural & Applied Economics, University of Wisconsin
http://www.aae.wisc.edu/research/detail.asp?id=4
4. Center for Community Economic Development -- Cooperative Extension Service, University of Wisconsin
http://www.uwex.edu/ces/cced/
5. Center for Cooperatives -- University of Wisconsin
http://www.wisc.edu/uwcc/
6. Grants Information Center -- University of Wisconsin at Madison

If institutions of higher education in your locality provide web pages or links of any similar sort, you are cordially invited to visit the "International and U.S.A. Students' Civic Action Network E-Mail Groups" site, at:
http://www.angelfire.com/ca6/yourturf4/tcafustudentnets.html
... and consider responding to the "Invitation and Challenge" that you will find there.
I hope the above information will be of interest. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to share them.

The Marching Dukes -- They Knocked My Socks Off !!
|
G'Day All --
I realize many "TIGers" already have splendid stereo versions of all the latest and best music on their iPods. Nevertheless, I always enjoy stumbling across various kinds of interesting tunes that some thoughtful folks have made freely available for everyone on the Web.
So, how's this for a Friday treat ?? Crank up your speakers and check out the Marching Dukes of James Madison University:

Hope you'll find some tracks you like. If you also know of web sites that provide good vibes, I hope you'll share them with the rest of us.
Best wishes, Dave Matthews

Easy Way to Match Your Needs and Interests on the Free University's Virtual Campus
|
G'Day All --
Item 1: Easy Way to Match Your Needs and Interests on the Free University's Virtual Campus
If you haven't explored The Civic Action Free University's virtual campus recently, you're cordially invited to do so. A lot has been added in recent months.
The Civic Action Free University
http://www.tcafu.net
A critic recently commented that there's so much material on the site, when she pulls it up on her computer screen it just makes her eyes glaze over. She asked, "What's the easiest way to find items that are most relevant to my specific needs and interests ??
Each person may have his/her own preferred way of answering that question, but here's my suggestion: Try printing the site out (its about 15 pages on my printer), and scan over the hard copy with a highlighter pen, marking the portions that you find of greatest interest. That's the quickest and most comfortable way I know to identify the portions of the site that you'd like to go back and visit in depth on-line.
Remember that our "Money Back Guarantee" applies: If you like what you see, please tell others. If you don't -- or if you run into any problems -- please e-mail your "HF" (Humble Facilitator), so an appropriate remedy can be found.

Item 2: Role Played by *Some* of the Mass Media in Maintaining an Informed Electorate
As we're all aware, an important role of the mass communications media in a democratic society is that of providing news and information to ensure that the electorate is well informed about significant issues facing the nation. Below is a humorous flash presentation that illustrates the extent to which *some* of the communications media are fulfilling that responsibility.
Two versions are provided so you can choose the one that plays best on your system. Sound capability is helpful, but not essential to get the point. The version with an "swf" suffix gives full-screen presentation, but normally requires a high speed connection:

I hope you'll find the above material to be useful. If you have questions, comments or suggestions, please share them.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day -- Some Thoughts
|
G'Day All --
As you are well aware, there are significant variations between the war in Vietnam and the current war in Iraq -- involving substantially different adversaries, ideology, tactics, geopolitical implications, etc.
We know the views that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. came to hold with regard to Vietnam. However, we cannot be certain what he might have thought about Iraq.
The maker of the following presentation obviously thinks Dr. King's position on both wars would have been the similar. Whether that is true is a matter you are obviously able to sort out for yourself.
Two versions are provided, so you can determine which one plays best on your system. Sound capability is necessary. The one with an "swf" suffix gives full-screen presentation, but normally requires a high speed connection:

From a different web site, "Peace Takes Courage," here's a short animation on the subject of poverty:
